Description
Being the 100th locomotive to be produced to the designs of LNER Chief Mechanical Engineer Sir Nigel Gresley, it was decided to name locomotive 4498 after him. 'Sir Nigel Gresley' was completed at the end of 1937 and paired with a corridor tender previously used by A1 and A3 Pacifics. After the Second World War, now inherited by BR and re-numbered to 60007, 'Sir Nigel Gresley' achieved the post-war steam speed record of 112mph, this done while hauling a full rake of coaches.
